CLINICAL APPLICATIONS & DISEASE

Contrast sensitivity testing provides early detection of serious eye diseases and/or conditions that a standard 20/20 letter acuity chart may not detect until the condition is more advanced. Such diseases and/or conditions include cataracts, glaucoma, amblyopia, macular degeneration, keratoconus and optic neuritis. Contrast sensitivity testing has also been shown to detect other types of diseases and/or conditions including diabetes, cerebral lesions, AIDS and Alzheimer's disease at early stages, sometimes before other symptoms may appear.

Contrast sensitivity testing is recognized by the FDA as a more comprehensive and accurate method of assessing vision in clinical trials. With the advent of new technology such as the wavefront, intraocular lenses and refractive surgery, many eye care practitioners and ophthalmic companies are turning to contrast sensitivity testing to monitor the progress of their patients.
