BENEFITS
OF CONTRAST SENSITIVITY TESTING
The benefits of
contrast sensitivity testing are many.
:: Contrast
sensitivity testing can assist in the early detection of serious eye
diseases, that the traditional 20/20 letter visual acuity chart may
not detect until the condition is more advanced. It also helps in more
accurate monitoring of ocular conditions.
:: Contrast
sensitivity testing complements the traditional 20/20 visual acuity
value by measuring more subtle vision losses due to problems with spectacle
lenses and contact lenses. It also offers important information in the
fitting of contact lenses, such as multifocal contact lenses.
:: Contrast
sensitivity testing assists in more precise assessments of patients
prior to surgery and post-operatively, and can produce predictive measures
of certain diseases including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration
and diabetes.
:: Contrast
sensitivity testing is helpful in tracking and measuring a patient's
visual performance before and after refractive and laser surgeries,
providing ophthalmologists with a tool to help them manage a patient's
expectations of surgery. The traditional 20/20 letter chart does not
adequately meet the testing needs in these areas, leaving many people
subject to vision impairments that can affect the quality and safety
of their lives.
VSRC - Comprehensive
Functional Vision Testing :: VSRC supports a battery of tests that
provide a comprehensive measure of functional vision. These tests not
only produce greater predictive measures of eye disease but also assess
our ability to see in low-contrast situations (for example, fog and
rain), high-glare situations or at night. See Functional
Vision Test Battery for more information.
